WELL, LOOKS LIKE not a lot of people wanted to drink out of the other side of the glass or try to hold their breath, & I guess they like the look of that young whippersnapper Dan For Mayor. Because both of CTV's new comedies came back with very respectable 2nd week numbers -- over 1.1 million viewers each.
And that is up against a new episode of HOUSE, which is, or flirts with, being the number one scripted show in Canada. Yes, yes, House demolished them. But owning any piece of that podium in a highly competative slot is reason to celebrate.

Sorry -- how does a 45% drop in audience from week one count as "respectable"?
Because last week the number one show on Canadian TV was not on. And this week it was, and it did 2.7 million, but over a million STILL chose the Canadian sitcoms.
Jim, if you're determined to see defeat and failure you're going to see it. You seem to want to be able to call foul.
Everybody's talked about the million yardstick for so long, and in week two, both the shows made it. All the arguments everyone made -- olympic habit, etc, etc...I didn't meet a single person who predicted those comedies would stay above a million this week. And yet they did.
I'm one for taking the stink eye when needed but at the same time, it's a little churlish to say to the kid who struggles on the math test when he scores a big one, "why didn't you get the A+?"
I don't think I'm determined to see failure, but I am trying to honestly assess reality.
If all the Olympic hype for these two comedies plus having the experienced casts, writers and production staffs of "Corner Gas" doesn't translate into anything more than smaller numbers than "Gas" used to reach, are we actually building an audience -- or is a million more or less all we can ever hope for?
It's also kind of disingenuous for CTV and a lot of supporters of these two series to trumpet last week's 1.9 as meaningful and then come back a week later and say, "Oh yeah, but we were playing Latvia and their goalie didn't even show up."
Same thing happened Friday night with "The Bridge", smaller numbers than "Flashpoint" used to get in the same time slot and in the Friday deadzone where there's no competition at all.
Just saying that if "Hiccups" and "Dan" had taken even a bite out of "House" we could say we're getting somewhere. As it is, I'm just not sure.
Point is, it's 40 percent drop. Not great, but HOUSE posted a RECORD NUMBER last night -- b/c people have been waiting for new HOUSEs for weeks.
If we're around 400 000 in three weeks that's one thing.
That -- and lower -- is what CTV was getting for the Sat night dead zone stuff when they were burning off Robson, Jeff Ltd, etc.
In that climate, with the whole build in thing of Canadian audiences going apeshit for US stuff, and all the extra promotion it gets -- if we stay at or around a million, then yes. That is not a shameful number. No way.
And it's a comedy. It's allowed to fluctuate. The numbers that CG got were always in the 1.2 to 1.8 or so range if I recall. So the point is -- you pre emptively throwing in the towel is pretty negative there, Nancy.
And yeah, I called you Nancy Cowboy. What are you gonna do about it?
