John From Dunzo

WELL. SO. I guess John gets to go back to Cincinnati.

David Milch's latest, canceled, and though there's much in me to like with the show. Zippy, who breathed and said not a fucking word and then was dead. And Cissy, a bitch these many years on no good account of that asshole husband, and Shaun, dear God, Shaun with his blankness, Jesus Christ Jesus Christ!

I don't know Butchie instead.

I have yet to watch the finale so I don't have much to say. But Tod VanderWerff at South Dakota Dark sums it up pretty well in the lede to his wrapup:

Frustrating, enervating and enthralling, John from Cincinnati might be the most awesome show that I couldn't ever determine the quality of.

Yup. That's about the size of it. I'll watch, but I won't be happy that this is that which cost us more Deadwood. Go read Todd here. Me, I'm sticking with the Mad Men.

Psssst... I've been trying to ignore it, because it really is irrelevant, but the proofreader (and former Ohio resident) in me is threatening to explode my skull.

Cinci has two Ns and one T. Counterintuitive but true.

:: rubs hands in anticipation of FINALLY getting to those three MM eps waiting patiently on the TiVo. ::

I for one am going to miss JFC... I may not have understood what was going on most of the time, but it brought me back week after week. I suspect in 20 years time it'll make a lot of insiders short lists. That seems to have been the thing about JFC, every writer I've talked to loved the showe...or loved the audacity/the attempt.

As for MM...I just don't get it guys... then again I've never been a period drama type of viewer. MM feels like costume drama for blokes to me. It smacks of Studio 60 to me..all surface and no heart...

Well the problem is, with MM, you're talking about a program about a time of licentiousness on one hand, but also a lot of repression -- so what you call "surface" is really respondent to that.

I can't believe that you'd watch Ep 4 and see those scenes between the screwed up kid of divorce and the "doesn't even know what's wrong with her life" wife -- complete with the inappropriate burgeoning sexual awakening on the part of the boy, and call that surface. That was all subtext. As was Pete's entire journey through the episode.
