Opening the Vault to talk Specs

SO I'M BACK at the start of trying to come up with new development stuff. So I was rereading some old process posts of mine. I know a few people read and linked to my recent articles about the steps involved in production writing. That was from a perspective of working on a 'go' show. When it comes to speccing stuff from scratch, I did write about that too -- but in a much earlier series of posts -- which I'll happily dredge up for you now.

Starting out, or Know Your Shit Cold

(It's amusing to see how chipper I was then.)

Then a little while later I outlined my process of writing a spec.

At the end of Part Three I talk about doing a Part Four. And I'm sure in the deep sands of time, I felt I had more to say about reading your spec back. But things happened, and Part Four never did, and now I can't figure out what the hell I was going to say. So there is no Part Four. Sorry.

Or Maybe, just maybe, Part Four is UP TO YOU.

Right? Right?

Nah. There's no part four. Just move it along, now.

Of course, once you're reading your script back, I guess any of a number of old posts could spiritually be your Part Four.

Like -- remember the cup. Be critical, but not too critical. Do try to avoid directing on the page, or throwing in music cues.

And if you're lucky, on the other end, maybe, just maybe, you may have pulled off The Impossible Trick.
