THE PREMIERE EPISODE of THE BORDER "Pockets of Vulnerability," is now available for streaming, online viewing at CBC.CA. I've also heard that -- wonder of wonders -- some of the more nefarious methods of getting TeeVee seem to have...um... taken a liking to it. But why watch that way when you can access the site, for a nice, measurable hit that CBC can factor in to their calculations of viewership?

A couple of notes: I'm not sure if this site is geo-locked or not. If you're from the USA or Abroad, could you let me know in the comments below whether you can or cannot access the show?

Also: The Border is running this pretty nifty mobile contest right now using QR codes. Apparently on promos and bus ads there are these little codes. If you take a picture with your cell phone camera and text that pic to a special number, you can win a $1000 Best Buy card. That is a GREAT deal and I bet the odds are pretty good, too. I don't know if this is retroactive geo-locking, but I'm getting "This Content is Currently Unavailable" which is what I get whenever I try to see the cute online content for "Little Mosque on the Prairie." I'll try again later this evening and see if it's just net congestion. But I'll find it somehow. Eventually. I have faith.

but full disclosure: on Monday i bailed after half an hour and then watched it streaming this morning instead of working.
i'm glad i did;the resolution was quite clever i thought. though i'm troubled that i bailed at the half way mark when i was at home.
that said, definitely in for the second one. and i suppose since i comment here way too often, i'll have to watch the third.
i'm picking away at the across the river, finished for the first two and partway through the third, loving the story.
Clever resolution, alright, but it had consequences and a price to be paid for it. As we saw, and it was exactly the right ending for this first installment.
Looking forward to the next one.

No way it gets undone. Not unless CBC wants ContentFilm and Peace Arch yelling at them, too.

Back to the "make puppydog eyes at Canadian buds" plan...
After watching the first episode, I'm a bit sad to see the requisite computer nerd with the social skills of a howler monkey, probably because I think my social skills are just dandy, thankyouverymuch and only most of my colleagues are monkeys.
The product placement shots were too obvious, though that's no slag on the writing. Tim Horton's coffee cups are so well known, showing the whole logo is just not necessary, much less awkward unnatural holding positions and a weird pause in the pace of the show. The Loréal ad was very fuzzy but clearly Loréal and I was left, again, focusing on the placement instead of the action/dialogue and it took me out of the story.
The lines seemed good but ran weird, probably because it was the first episode and the characters aren't fully people yet, though there were some subtle hints for some characters and some bonk-you-over-the-head ones for others (e.g. main guy and Nigel Bennett's character).
I was a bit unsettled with a couple of the actors because they are iconic from shows like Forever Knight and Sue Thomas FBEye, which for various reasons I know all too well, but I'll get over that, I imagine.
Nigel Bennett's character is sufficiently evil that my memories of other movies and shows where he's been evil don't conflict. Another Forever Knight face.
I was relieved that innocent man got to come home, and really startled when the previews came on, it seemed like an entirely different show for episode 2. ! I guess I'll see, though.
All in all, I enjoyed the young male detective with the rough complexion's banter and behaviour the most, and the older rounder male detective. "Natalie"'s character seems very well suited to her. Even though she'll be a coroner forever (knight) to me, I like seeing her in mature roles now.
I especially liked watching it on the web. I ended up watching it over two nights and clicking around to catch pieces I wasn't looking at when something exciting happened. I don't have a PVR, so the web is the only way I can do that sort of thing.
I live in Texas and watched the premiere online last Tuesday (January 9). I enjoyed the premiere very much (only slightly annoyed by the shaky camera work and quick cutting) and was looking forward to watching the rest of the episodes online each Tuesday. But noooooooooooooo! How annoying is "this content is currently unavailable" over and over. I should've married the guy from Montreal instead of dumping him for the Texas boy.
