There's very little of that left in the news media today. But Ed Bradley had it to spare.
Bradley died of leukemia today. Our media discourse is made infinitely poorer with his loss.
One of my first memories of being interested in a news program was 60 Minutes, soon after Bradley joined in 1981. Something in his manner both soothed and challenged. He could ask a tough question, and hold feet to the fire, and still seem like a gentleman. Our discourse has coarsened and cheapened, august men have given way to cheap bleating suits and blowhards of all stripes. But the methodical, thoughtful, humanistic style of Bradley's interviews will always stay with me.
He had the best interview I've ever seen with Miles Davis. His conversation with Oklahoma City Bomber Timothy McVeigh was both shocking and surprising. Lena Horne, Paul Simon...the list goes on. He was always the highlight of 60 Minutes for me. I can't tell you how much I'll miss him.
