Oscars are live on M-net at like 3:00 a.m. so not too many folk will have seen them - replayed in the evening on Monday so those interested tend to spend the whole day avoiding newspapers, TV's, blogs(!!!) so they can watch the show faux live.
That Tsotsi won is awesome, and certainly unexpected given the strong showing in recent awards of Paradise Now. When Tsotsi first hit our screens, there was a major groundswell of support for it, both popular and critical. Lately, however, there's been an upsurge of criticism against it - mawkish, over-acting, stereotypical portrayal of a black man as a thug and, my personal favourite: a white person (Gavin Hood) shouldn't be telling a black person's story.
This award might not shut the detractors up (and some of their criticisms are fair, it must be added) but at least it'll give those involved in the production the quiet satisfaction of being SA's first foreign film winner. Now all that's left is best film and, my personal favourite, best screenplay.
