So finished today's work a little early. Weaned myself off CNN for five minutes. The footage though, has me thinking: really, what the hell is happening to the United States? We've had two election cycles where international observers were turned away or reported serious voting fraud. Now we have American refugees wandering around, where the government seems indifferent and incapable of helping them in a timely way, while in the capital, the guys in charge still talk about dividing spoils and sending tax breaks to their friends.
WHEN DID THE UNITED STATES BECOME A @^%#%&@ THIRD WORLD COUNTRY?
I spent four months in South Africa last year; a disorienting enough experience because you go from the first to the third world there in the space of a block. But it's not as disorienting as this.
What's next? Is Bush going to start dressing himself in military fatigues and start calling himself Mister Generalissimo?
Oh Snap! Oh Shit! It's happening!

Are we going to ask for aid from the United Nations? The gulf area affects commerce around the world. I mean seriously, how the hell are we going to pay for all this?
Dubya should be placing that call to the Pentagon and getting the National Guardsmen in Iraq back home where they could do some good.
And when Pakistan and Israel decide to talk about foreign relations, and Israel pulls out of Gaza - we got some serious peace mojo going on in the Middle east.

It's not going to happen, Bill. Here's why: the idiot in the Oval Office will NEVAH admit he's made a mistake. NEVAH. He even went so far as to lie to Diane Sawyer, already!
AND, with Condi Rice doing things like shopping for shoes while on vacation in New York, Cheney on vacation in who-the-hell-knows-where (and no time table for his return)it's not likely that there's anyone around to tell the moron that it would be politically expedient for him to, at least, bring back the National Gaurd of LA so they can try to get to their families... instead of being marroned in the desert waiting to be rotated.
Hey, serious question, Denis. Would the Canadian govt do better? I mean, we pay more taxes. Does Ottawa react more quickly and more effectively when things go to hell?
Well that's an interesting question, Alex. You tell me. What was the ice storm reaction like?
I think there are lots of variables that make this case pretty special, but one thing I do know is that because Canada isn't burdened with the "we're number one and can do it ourselves" thing they would immediately figure out how to accept help from the countries who pledged it -- including the U.S.
And they'd need it, since the Canadian forces are smaller.
You could also argue that because Canadians as a whole are more sensitve to environmental issues (hangover from being a hewers of wood; drawers of water culture) the Canadian government probably couldn't have gotten away with what the 'publicans did to weaken the wetland and levee repair efforts on the Gulf Coast.
But that gives me an idea...
