Ax Falls at Former Chum
RIGHT NOW, APPROXIMATELY 105 people, most at 299 Queen Street West, are being laid off. The layoffs include, reportedly, the entire production staffs of STAR! and MuchMoreMusic.
Sorry to hear this news, and sorry to know that pain is being directed to too many of my elsewhere-based neighbours. Whether it was delivered with malice aforethought or not doesn't really matter right now.
Alex, to be perfectly honest with you I'm pretty focused on the people I know who got the sack right now. I don't really know what it means for scripted. But you can bet as a lead up to all the broadcasters saying "we can't afford our CanCon requirements," it's not going to be good news.
They'll all be looking to do co-pros, preferrably treaty co-pros where they can put in 20% of budget and do post here and it will still qualify as Cancon. Just a theory.

Would you care to speculate how the round of layoffs everywhere is going to affect scripted drama?
Very sad to hear this. Lots of amazing & talented people working there. My thoughts are with those affected by the cuts.
Damn.

This sucks hard.
How much of this has to do with the BCE buyout trouble? Can't be purely coincidental, can it?
