I too am really disappointed they didn't go with Paterson Joseph -- he's ridiculously talented and would just look awesome in the role.
And yet...within minutes of watching the interview with Matt Smith, I was hooked. He's smart, got that same nerdy-sexy thing David Tennant was working, but there's something spooky about that look in his eye.
Charismatic yet off-putting...he's perfect! :D
And, of course, with Steven Moffat as head writer, you could cast a sea sponge in the role and the show would still be amazing. Can't wait!
Why should we have a black Doctor for the sake of having one? I'd rather have the BBC concentrate on having good actors and actresses than making sure they hit a certain quota.
And why are we assuming Smith was chosen or that others were rejected due to race?
Ooohh... just eeked a few seconds to watch the interview.
I was originally crushed to learn Tennant was moving on. He'd surpassed my (likely embellished) memories of Tom Baker and Peter Davison. I was absolutely convinced that the next one could only be a let down.
After seeing the interview, however, I'm excited and looking foward to seeing what Smith is going to do. Very charismatic. Like Scott said, I think Smith is going to be a really good fit.
Respectfully, I disagree. Choosing a non-black actor obviously proves that the UK is a racist country.
...okay, I know, I know. I can't keep that up. What am I even thinking, poking Doctor Who fans, the humorless badgers of SF fandom. I must need a head CT.
For the record...that was a joke. I'm sure the dood they chose will be lovely.
Man, was I bummed the day I heard Paterson Joseph was being "buzzed" as the front-runner, because it meant he was the traditional red herring. It was fun to imagine, though, even knowing it was guaranteed not to happen.
My only concern with young Mr. Smith is that he's awfully similar to Tennant in physical type, which means he needs to be a big persona shift. Otherwise it might as well be the recasting of Darren Stephens. But they have a year and a half to work that out.
Meanwhile, it's worth noting in these hard economic times that both the Internet and popcorn are still cheap. Who needs reality shows?

Snowy 2004,

I was rooting for Chiwetel Ejiofor myself. Definitely in the "good actor" column of the spreadsheet!
Oh well...
DMc: Curse you. You finally had a post up where I understood something about the topic... and it was a joke post.
Bah. Feh.
What!? Just because Obama won the presidency, Dr. Who HAS to be black?? Idiot.
The non-black Doctor Who was bad enough, but now they're also taking gullible out of the dictionary?
WTF?!!!
It's a perfectly good word!
What are these idiots thinking!!!!!?????????
DMc: Fool me once ...
(You'd think by now I'd learn to be more wary of the traps!)
Respectfully yours,
-Humorless Badger and DToS Fan
