WELL HERE'S AN interesting little tale for you:
Seems like the recently canceled MVP has gotten picked up by cable in the USA. First season episodes will run on SOAPnet. Now, I don't know much about SOAPnet, other than the fact that it's the channel one of my little sisters seems to have grafted directly onto her eyes every time she visits my parents in Florida -- but supposedly they're going to tour around and about and push the stars of the show -- so MVP will in essence, get a second launch.
There's a couple of things that are intriguing about this. Not the least of which is this: for all the noise surrounding the dropping of JPOD, I've not heard any similar clamor from down south for a pickup. I also think that MVP isn't really soapy ENOUGH for a channel like SOAPnet - but maybe that's the point. It's probably a higher value series than they could afford on their own.
According to the articles, CBC retains the right to pick up the show if it does well in the USA - meaning if they could come in for a 2nd season window at a much lower price. Entirely possible.
All of this contains within it the abject lessons of this business: when the show was axed a few weeks back, the producer went to great pains to give a very even-handed quote. She didn't take the bait that so many Canadian producers do, and bash the network.
Consequently, here 's a possible act two for the show -- and no bridges were burned. Imagine such a thing.
The Canadian TV industry is such a curious place; people who won't speak up when they should, and people who won't shut up when it's clearly in their best interests to do so. Funny thing, that.
