EDIT: Hey, if you're American, and you're coming here from a link you saw on the SHOWTIME site, you should know that it's great that Showtime linked to this entry, but we in Canada, or anywhere else in the world, for that matter, can't access any of the pages on Showtime. Any of them. Including the one that's getting free content from me.
That might not seem like a big deal to you, but it is to me. In Canada, I watch DEXTER on TMN, The Movie Network. They're a pretty good channel, mainly because they have all the best original programming from SHOWTIME AND HBO. You don't have to choose. See, if you're in the USA, and you're paying for Showtime, you should know that we in Canada are getting a better product for a better price.
Now, if you're from Showtime, how about de-linking this, you fascist eejits?

Gotta give all you's who don't give a fig about Canadian TV sumpin, so...
I argue. I do. I'm a guy who knows what he thinks, and is only too willing to tell you. It's the New Yorker DNA, I'm sure.
But I maintain, in my defense, that I'm also never so set in my ways that I can't admit when I was wrong.
I was wrong about Dexter. And it's a really exciting thing to admit. Maybe it's the deftness of the writing, maybe it's the way that the "good" characters are so imperfect in their shady ways, but this show has completely turned me around.
A few weeks ago I would have insisted that this was a bridge too far, that no matter how charismatic an actor, no matter how great the scripts, trying to sell a sympathetic serial killer was just a cynical ploy for calculated outrage. That it could never be sustained.
The depth of my wrongness leaves me breathless, and energized about the boundaries of character and characterization in the television medium. I don't know what the limits are, but they weren't where I thought they were. With Dexter, they've moved the goalposts. Now...may God have mercy on their souls. Heh heh.
Also, bonus points for the heartiest, most surprising laugh I've had in many a moon: "this may be better."
5 rumbles:
Dexter is one of those shows that I sit there watching with my mouth agape thinking "this is the sort of TV I want to make."
Heroes was quickly dumped from my traditional viewing schedule (no PVR yet) because it has the misfortune to be counter-programmed to my beloved Dexter.
There is no comparison. Dexter is hands-down my favourite new show.
And yeah, that opening title sequence? Breath-taking.
I LOVE this show.
I did, originally, think it was going to more of a TV version of American Psycho, but it’s far too… good, for that: in American Psycho, everyone was absolutely selfish and venal; in this show, no one is, not even Dexter’s new friend. Yes, he dismembers people, but he’s not really a villain of the piece; he’s just a guy trying to help a fellow craftsman achieve his potential, like he’s giving a buddy tips on how to bowl a strike (which let’s the writers play nice little beats of Dexter thinking he’s a hack).
I like that the flashbacks with James Remar weren’t just an exposition device for the pilot: it’s such an important relationship for Dexter, it’s great that they made it essential for the show (the fanboy in me wants an entire episode centred around the flashbacks, but I don’t think they’d be willing to put Michael C. Hall in that wig for so long).
And while the “this may be better” line was good, I preferred the slightly disturbing moment where the neighbour finds out her dog’s missing, and, just for a moment, (and indeed, this may have just been me and my jagged edged brain) you think Julie Benz may have just gone nuts and offed it. And it would have made sense.
Yes, there’s something a little bit wrong with me.
I feel like I'm one of the few people who's actually discovered this show. I must admit the premise creeped me out but then when a friend was cast on Dexter, I thought I'd give it a chance. Who knew a serial killer could be so sympathetic? I don't know where this show is going but I'm certainly going to watch every episode.
Told ya. Sounds like I am not the only one with a crush on Dexter.
DEXTER is the mad pulp I want to see on my tv or computer screen.
